A New Jersey man has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of former Broadway actress Imani Dia Smith, who once appeared in “The Lion King.” Authorities say the heartbreaking incident has led to serious criminal charges and an ongoing investigation.

Arrest and Charges

Investigators announced that 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small of Edison was taken into custody without incident. He faces multiple charges, including:

  • First-degree murder

  • Second-degree endangering the welfare of a child

  • Third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose

  • Fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon

Officials emphasized that the legal process is still underway and that Jackson-Small, like all defendants, is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center while awaiting a pretrial detention hearing.

Not a Random Act, Investigators Say

Prosecutors noted that Jackson-Small and Smith knew each other prior to the incident and stressed that the killing does not appear to be random.

What Happened the Day of the Incident

Police responded to a call around 9:18 a.m. on December 21 at a residence on Grove Avenue in Edison. When officers arrived, they found 26-year-old Imani Dia Smith suffering from stab wounds.

She was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was later pronounced dead.

The investigation is being handled by the Edison Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward.

A Bright Talent Remembered

Smith was known in the theater world for her performance as Young Nala in Disney’s “The Lion King” during the 2011–2012 Broadway season. Family members say her love for performing reflected her creativity, confidence, and drive.

Beyond the stage, she was a devoted mother to her three-year-old son and deeply connected to her family. She leaves behind her child, parents, and two younger siblings.

Community Support Through Grief

In the days after her death, Smith’s aunt, Kira Helper, started a GoFundMe campaign to support the family with both immediate expenses and long-term needs. Funds are being directed toward funeral and memorial costs, counseling, legal matters, and continued support for Smith’s young son as her parents take on caregiving responsibilities.

“Imani had her whole life ahead of her,” Helper wrote, describing her niece as “vivacious, loving, and fiercely talented.”

The fundraiser also acknowledges the emotional and financial challenges facing the family as they mourn while caring for Smith’s child. According to recent updates, the campaign has raised more than $71,000.

Helper expressed gratitude for the compassion shown by friends, neighbors, and supporters, saying the outpouring of kindness has provided comfort during an incredibly painful time.
